One of the main limiting factors in the efficiency of poultry production, both for
broilers and for laying hens, is thermal stress. Prolonged periods of thermal stress
can cause reduced performance and increased morbidity and mortality, resulting in
significant economic losses. Birds demonstrate very specific behavioral patterns
when they are under heat stress. In this condition, birds tend to move less within the
facility. Video tracking is suitable for measuring behavior as a spatial measure,
seeking to know the level of agitation of the animal and the distance covered. The
hypothesis of this work is that the birds' agitation behavior is affected by the
temperature of the aviary's thermal environment and the degree of agitation can be
used to assess thermal comfort. Thus, the objective of this work was to develop an
agitation index that can be used to infer the thermal well-being of birds raised on
wood shavings. The tracking was performed based on the capture of an analog video
signal that is digitized and from each frame the resulting pixels are analyzed to
determine the location of the tracked animals. MatLab® software was used to
process and analyze the recorded images. An algorithm capable of processing
images was then developed and from these processes extracting data that allowed
the calculation of an index that indicates the behavioral reactions of birds in relation
to temperature variations in the breeding environment. The main measure sought
should be directly proportional to the variation in the spread of birds in the scene and
also to the movement of the group of birds. Considering that each bird is a point in a
set defined by the frame, the method of calculating Hausdorff's distances was
chosen, as it measures exactly this variation of interest. Using the Hausdorff distance
concept, we sought the longest distance between the two frames between the
shortest distances found between the bird in one frame and all birds in the next
frame. For each experiment used as a test for the Agitation Index, the image
processing and analysis algorithm was applied. The generated Shake Index returns a
distance traveled value in pixels. As this distance covered is evaluated over a period
of time, it can also be considered that this index expresses a speed, thus configuring
an agitation indicator. Thus, it was possible to observe significant differences in the
movement of birds in the two temperature conditions analyzed, be they inside and
above the thermoneutrality zone, confirming the initial hypotheses of this work. |
